Title: SNEAK ANALYSIS OF PROCESS SYSTEMS
Author: WHETTON, CP
Abstract: This paper presents a method of process hazard identification known as sneak analysis which has been developed from a similar method used in the aerospace industries. Sneak analysis aims to identify certain classes of hazard which can arise from latent design errors, from single-point failures, or from operator errors. It does not replace any existing method but rather supplements hazard identification methods such as HAZOP, 'What if ...?', and FMEA. Two existing methods of sneak analysis are examined, one based on clue-lists and network topology, the other based on path tracing between 'sources' and 'targets'. An improved method is described which combines elements of both existing methods and which has been specifically designed to integrate with HAZOP.
