Title: An evaluation of the perfusionist's equipment and task in neonatal open heart surgery
Author: Lindsay, J; Baber, C
Abstract: This study aimed to assess if the configuration of perfusion apparatus matches the tasks undertaken in surgery and to determine the nature and consequences of potential failures. Perfusionists controls heart and lung bypass equipment in open heart surgery. Task analyses provided a coherent task description and reviewed the use of equipment by three perfusionists at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children (GOSH). An equipment configuration, more suited to the tasks, was proposed from this data. Perfusion involves high stakes and a multitude of potential failures; an FMEA highlighted potential errors and their consequences. Such errors are typically rare and perfusionists face the enormous difficulty of deciding appropriate corrective actions. A simulator could provide training to cope with such events; this research will contribute to it's development.
